Explore China – Business and Cultural Trip Fall 2010china

We have an excellent opportunity to join with other Chamber members in the inland northwest to participate in a 10 day tour of China. We have been invited by the Coeur d’ Alene Chamber to join them on charter tours this Fall, leaving on October 2nd and 11th. There is still space available on the tour departing on October 2nd. It is a chance to do some excellent site seeing and to consider developing global business opportunities.

The tour departs from Seattle and goes to Beijing. You tour the sites of Beijing as well as the cities of Shanghai, Suzhou, Hanzhou, and will depart from Shanghai. The full itinerary is impressive and you can find out more at www.CdAChamber.com.

The cost of the trip is amazing. For $1,899 per person you will receive roundtrip international airfare with bus transportation to and from Seattle, 5-Star and  4-Star Hotel stays, 3 full meals each day, deluxe tour busses, English speaking tour guides, admission tickets to tourist spots and airport taxes throughout the trip. The trips is arranged through Citslinc International, Inc., an organization that specializes in business and cultural tours for Chambers of Commerce.  Due to the volume of business in creating Chamber tours, they can make this value possible.

If you are interested in going, let us know at our office as soon as possible. Payment for the trip must be made by July 27th.  We are keeping track of the list for our group but individual registrations and payments will be handled by the Coeur d’Alene Chamber. Don’t miss this unique opportunity.

“Promoting Your Business and Info to Help You Do Business”

Dear Members:

We have had a great response to ShopSpokaneValley.com with 56 of our members signed up for pages offering printable coupons. We are looking forward to the “Buy Valley, Buy Value” concept really taking off. You probably saw the full page ads that came out in our local papers last week and the digital billboards are just starting.  Last night as I was driving home, it was a real thrill to see the first one at Sprague and Evergreen.  There is another one at Argonne and two more will be going up on August 2nd. This is just the beginning of a promotional plan to bring our members more business.

http://i7.createsend4.com/ti/r/3F/34C/434/061909/images/ssv.pngI had question recently from one of our members about whether a business that is not in Spokane Valley can participate.  The answer is “Yes”.  This is the site to promote members of the Spokane Valley Chamber of Commerce and we are the only Chamber with this type of program.  I believe it has exciting potential.  We can track the responses to the pages and can give you data about the activity on your page if you are participating.  We will also be looking at the increased traffic to www.shopspokanevalley.com as a result of our promotional efforts. We know that now, more than ever, it is important to quantify the value of promotional investment.

I am hearing great things about our new e-magazine and thank you to those who submitted articles for this edition.  Please continue to send your news to info@spokanevalleychamber.org. As for the whole topic of social media, we are moving ahead to use that to its full advantage.  I want to encourage you to go sign up on our Facebook page and to use our “members only” site, www.myvalleychamber.com . On that site we will be creating communication groups for our committees, teams and taskforces. Our first one will be for our Ambassadors this month and others will follow. You will be able to communicate together on important issues and keep us all connected. My goal this is to keep you informed and minimize the number of “email blasts” you receive from us. If you are like me, you get so many things in your inbox that it’s hard to read everything, but we do not want you to miss important information.

We want to plan programs for our breakfasts and lunch time issue forums that have content of value.  Skip Bonuccelli and John Guarisco are heading up a team to look at good ideas. If you have heard a good speaker or if you think there is an issue that is important to our business community, let me know.  Our breakfast program on July 16th is a good example. The theme “Health Care Reform:What Employers Need to Know”,  has important information and the opportunity of a good question and answer session. Our breakfast in August will feature “Progress in Liberty Lake” and will be out at the Pavillion at the Meadowwood Technology Campus (former Agilent building). This is an amazing facility and if you have not had the chance to see it, you won’t want to miss this opportunity.

One other piece of news to share, is that the Valley Chamber was featured on July 11th on KHQ-6 on the “Investment Northwest” news program.  Dave Cotton interviewed John Pederson about the success of our NxLevel Entrepreneur Program as a part of our total business development efforts.  We are producing the most graduates in the state for this entrepreneur training program.  If you missed it, we will be getting a copy of the interview to post on our website.  John did a great job!

I will be working on the first edition of my blog soon. I am looking forward to communicating with you in this new way and responding back to your comments and questions.

Enjoy the warm days of summer and I hope to see you at our 14th Annual Golf Tournament on August 17th at Meadowwood in Liberty Lake!

Sincerely,
Eldonna Shaw, President & CEO

News

AlexGreater Spokane Valley Chamber of Commerce is pleased to welcome Alex Slashchyn as a Business Development Intern.

Alex is an MBA student from Ukraine currently at Eastern Washington University, participating in the Edmund S. Muskie Graduate Fellowship Program. The U.S. Congress established this Program in 1992. It aims to promote mutual understanding, build democracy and foster the transition to market economies in Eurasia through intensive academic study and professional training for fellows from the 12 countries of the former Soviet Union.

During his summer internship with us, Alex will be working with Director of Business Development, John Pederson, in numerous areas such as designing an Entrepreneurial Resource Center at the Valley Chamber Spokane Valley Business Center, assisting with the NxLevel Entrepreneur Program, operating the Valley Business Center at Liberty Lake, enhancing the Chamber relationship with the community and other opportunities as they arise. The primary purpose of the internship is for Alex to learn about U.S. business processes and determine how these processes might benefit companies in the Ukraine.
Alex hopes to start his own business after returning to his home country. However, he says that it will probably be necessary to work for someone else for a while before that can happen. He would like to explore the opportunity of becoming an international business consultant.

Alex began his internship on June 28th and will continue working with us until September 17th.  He has been invited to present a report of his intern activities to the Chamber Board of Directors at their regularly scheduled meeting in September.

July Business Connections Breakfast – “Health Care Reform:  What Employers Need to Know”

The July Business Connections Breakfast on July 16th will provide information about the new federal legislation that affects employer group insurance plans.  Our guest speakers will be Dick Denenny, Principal of RHD Employee Benefits and Brady Cass, Eastern WA Director of Asuris Northwest Health.  The program will address changes due to new legislation as well as alert you to tax credits that may be available to your company.   There will be opportunities for questions and answers.

A special feature at the breakfast will be an update on the new campaign “Change for the Better” to deal with the problem of panhandling by Ian Robertson from ChangePoint, the new nonprofit affiliate of Spokane Valley Partners.

Our major sponsor for the breakfast is the WBACC which offers benefit packages for chamber member businesses throughout the state. There will also be 11 other member exhibits and an exciting exhibit about the Golf Tournament on August 17th.

This is our general membership meeting but the public is invited because of the importance of the program topic. Registration is available on line at www.spokanevalleychamber.org. The cost is $25 per person and the event is at the Mirabeau Park Hotel with networking at 6:30 a.m. and the program beginning at 7:00 a.m.

14th Annual Scramble Golf Tournament – August 17th

GolfDon’t miss the opportunity to participate in the Valley Chamber’s 14th Annual Scramble Golf Tournament at Meadowwood Golf Course in Liberty Lake.  This event is not only the best networking opportunity of the year to develop business relationships but it provides an excellent opportunity to promote your business.   Registration forms and information is available on the home page of www.spokanevalleychamber.org.

You can also see a slide show of the event from last year . Reserve your team or meet new friends by joining a team. Terri Pasold from Go Small Biz is the Chairperson for this event and her team is doing a great job.  Members of the Golf Committee will be at the Business Connections Breakfast and can talk to you about ideas to promote your business as a tee or green sponsor.  We will also need promotional items for the Golf “Goodie Bags” so you can promote your business in that way too. Our major sponsors are Banner Bank, the Coeur d’Alene Casino Resort-Hotel and Mountain West Bank. The day will end with a great dinner brought to you by Outback Steakhouse. There will be fun prizes and activities throughout the day. Who knows, you may be the lucky winner of a new car from Gus Johnson Ford, if you hit the “Hole in One”. Pheasant InnPHEASANT HILL INN AND SUITES…….GOING GREEN

Going green is a national issue and like all businesses, it has hit the hospitality industry.   Our hotel community has been discussing this and looking for ways to serve our guests well and yet protect the city we all love.  It is a difficult balancing act and one which we have worked tirelessly on for the past two years.

The first step, auditing what the hotel uses on a day to day basis and how to purchase differently or use other products and still maintain guest satisfaction was a huge eye opener!!

The Pheasant Hill Inn and Suites like many limited service properties provides a full hot breakfast to our guests each morning.  For years ….as in since 1996, the hotel used paper plates, cups, service ware to serve breakfast on. We maintained hot food in the breakfast room with a sterno, a jellied fuel substance that creates heat for about two hours.    For many years that practice has been acceptable, it was clean, convenient and clean up was not labor intensive.

As we started counting how many paper plates and cups used on an annual basis, the number was staggering and all headed to our landfills…..60,000 plates, 45,000 cups, nearly 120,000 pieces of service ware were disposed of each year.  We used 2500 cans of sterno annually, what can you do with an empty sterno can?

We then added the number of shampoo, conditioner and hand lotion bottles that we put in 104 rooms each day as guest amenities, how many bars of soap, more paper cups for in room coffee and a second set of staggering numbers hits home the need for change.  We use nearly 40,000 bottles of shampoo, conditioner and hand lotion annually to provide our guests with a great experience and quality products.  The number of plastic bottles used to provide those amenities just never entered our thinking ….until we decided to be green.

An energy audit has helped us to realize that fluorescent bulbs rather than incandescent light bulbs saves dollars in electricity and reduces the carbon imprint we leave to do business each day, how we heat our water, light our building, wash nearly a ton of linens each year all fell under the “green microscope”.

During this time our staff members made regular suggestions, going green had made our team more aware of how they do their job and ways to reduce waste, energy and provide a great hotel stay with a much reduced impact on our Spokane Environment.
It sounds easy to say…..just buy another product to serve your guests.  In those decisions we have to ask how we will keep it clean, maintain it well, insure guest satisfaction, and meet all of the laws and regulations that a hotel must comply with.  Two years into the project we are proud of what we have achieved.

Elavon

The Costco membership alone has many benefits, but the Costco membership added with the merchant service opportunity offers twice as much value for businesses. For 13 years Costco has offered a merchant service program through Elavon that is designed specifically and exclusively for Costco business members.

Kelly Carlstrom, employed by Elavon, represents the Spokane and North Idaho Region offering credit card processing through Costco.

As you might expect from Costco, our program offers a great value, exceptional service, and is simple, and transparent with no hidden fee structure.  We also strive to understand the business member, and help them find ways to retain customers, and access and track new customers through their merchant program.

Additionally, we announced the Battle of the Badge Blood Drive Challenge winner. The Spokane Valley Fire Department won the challenge for the second year in a row and was presented with the traveling Battle of the Badge plaque live on the radio.

We will have members of the military at our locations assisting in the recruitment of donors, as well as donating themselves.

Once Upon A Child® Achieves 'Gold Standard’

http://i8.createsend4.com/ti/r/3F/34C/434/061909/images/ouac-logo.gifOnce Upon A Child of Spokane, located at 14401 E SpragueAvenue, has gone gold!  The local gently-used children’s reseller was recognized for achieving a "Gold Standard" measurement.

The Gold Standard is reached when a store achieves a set of standards set forth by the franchisor during the evaluation process. The Spokane store achieved the customer experience, store operations and consistent brand identity to earn Gold Standard recognition for the second consecutive year.

"Being recognized as a Gold Standard store is a very significant accomplishment, but even more, it means we’re succeeding in providing our customers the best shopping experience possible," said Thomas Lewis, owner of Once Upon A Child of Spokane. "Portraying a standardized look and maintaining a high level of experience for my customers helps ensure a consistent brand appearance, which in turn contributes to a more positive shopping experience. By reaching the Gold Standard, we’re helping create an identity that customers recognize and value."

To identify a Once Upon A Child Gold Standard store, look for the Gold Standard seal at the store or visit www.onceuponachild.com where Gold Standard stores are recognized on the store locator page.

"Once Upon A Child provides a place for parents to buy and sell their quality, gently used kids stuff for their ever-growing children -- saving them time and money," Lewis said. The Spokane location sells a wide selection of new and used kids stuff, such as apparel, furniture, equipment and toys.

Franchised and branded under Winmark Corporation -- a company that develops and supports franchises and provides financial services for retail stores that buy, sell, and trade new and used merchandise -- Once Upon A Child® has over 235 locations in North America, and all stores are individually owned and operated.

"We are very proud to recognize the Spokane location for reaching their goals and contributing to the Once Upon A Child overall mission to deliver the best brand experience in the industry," said Susan Baustian, director of Once Upon A Child.

Spokane Is Reading Welcomes Timothy Egan for 2010 Spokane County Library Event

Spokane Is Reading 2010 presents Pulitzer-Prize winning reporter and award-winning author Timothy Egan and his non-fiction book, The Big Burn: Teddy Roosevelt and the Fire that Saved America.

Mr. Egan will give two free presentations Thursday, Oct. 7, 2010: 1pm @ The Sons of Norway (6710 N. Country Homes Blvd.), and 7pm @ The Bing, (901 W. Sprague – downtown). Both presentations are followed by a book signing, and Auntie’s Bookstore will be selling copies of Mr. Egan’s work. No registration for either appearance is required. For additional information, visit www.spokaneisreading.org.

The Big Burn depicts events beginning the afternoon of August 20, 1910 when strong winds moved through the drought-stricken national forests of Washington, Idaho and Montana, whipping hundreds of small blazes, destroying towns and timber.

Mr. Egan narrates the struggles of the overwhelmed rangers against the fire and delves into President Teddy Roosevelt and his chief forester, Gifford Pinchot, as they took on the concept of national conservation.

Timothy Egan is the author of six books. His fifth book, The Worst Hard Time, won a National Book Award for non-fiction in 2006 and was named a New York Times Editor’s Choice, a New York Times Notable Book, a Washington State Book Award winner, and a Book Sense Book of the Year Honor Book. Julie CohenJulie Cohen, General Manager

qWhat can you tell us about yourself?

aRaised in Alaska, I learned to care for others. My mother was always taking in the neighborhood kids and they all called her mom!  I think that’s where I get my spirit of hospitality.  Since the seventh grade the only thing I have wanted to do is design, build run and live in my own hotel!

I have done everything from cook in a Cajun restaurant, day care cook, Salon Coordinator for Aveda Concept, to what I am doing now, Hotelier.  I have people ask from time to time why I am in the business, and the best answer I can give is “I can’t imagine doing ANYTHING else.”  I finally got into the business just over 13 years ago and I still stand by that statement!  The people I have met and the friends I have made along my way have kept the passion in my heart for serving our guests!

Holiday Inn ExpressHoliday Inn Express Spokane Valley

qWhat can you tell us about your company?

aOur hotel credo is “Arrive as Guests, Leave as Family” and our company mission statement is “Impress Guests”
The hotel has been open since 1996 and since has won numerous awards and accolades for the service the staff provides.  We are the ONLY 3 time winner Best Holiday Inn Express Worldwide.  All hotels have the same bricks and mortar; it’s the people that make the difference!   Owned and Operated by KVC Developments and Sterling Hospitality, Cal and Kent Clausen let the staff have the freedom to do whatever it takes for their guests to insure they have a memorable experience.
